It is great to welcome back our pupils after the summer break and extremely satisfying to see the ease with which they have moved into their new year groups. There is a very positive ‘buzz’ around the school and all classes have got off to a flying start with exciting new topics and activities. Staffing levels throughout the school have never been so high and this will ensure your children are well supported in all aspects of their development throughout the year.
This year our school achieved Year 6 SAT results above national average for reading, writing and maths combined with maths in particular being significantly above national levels. Whilst this is extremely pleasing, as a school we are constantly looking for ways to improve further. This academic year we are embarking on a major literacy project with a group of schools from Durham and Sunderland. The project will run over two years and involves all staff within the school. Over the two years we aim to transform teaching and learning in writing with the ultimate goal of making our school a ‘Primary Writing Project’ lead school so that we can support other schools in the North East.
On behalf of all the teachers can I ask you to encourage your children to develop good habits of reading daily at home, practicing times tables until they are fluent and returning homework on time. Support from parents has never been better at Willington Primary and I know we are in for another exciting and very successful school year.
