Welcome to Year 6

  • Class Teacher: Miss Jones

I would like to welcome you to Year 6. I hope you all had a super summer break and that your child is ready for this important and rewarding year – their last at Willington Primary School. I know many of you know me already from having taught younger siblings but for those of you who don’t, I’m Miss Jones. I’ve been teaching here at Willington Primary since 2010 and have spent the last 9 years teaching Year 6. Mrs Jacob and I are looking forward to working with your children and providing the support and guidance they need to maximise their learning potential and become the best that they can be.

Year 6 is an incredibly important year. Our aim is not only to give children the opportunity to bring together all of their prior learning in preparation to achieve the highest academic level possible but to help them become more organised and independent learners ready to embark upon the next step at secondary school.

By now, children should be working towards being proficient in all areas, particularly in reading, writing and maths. To ensure that children achieve to their full potential, it is important that support in certain key areas is provided at home as well as at school (areas such as reading, spelling and the timely completion of homework).

Reading

Please ensure your child reads regularly. By the time they reach Year 6, it is their responsibility to ensure they are quizzing on Accelerated Reader (and passing the quizzes) frequently. This will be closely monitored in class. Once they have hit the targets set for a half term, children are able to read their own choice of book or help themselves to my “Super Stash” until targets are reset the following half term and the process begins again.

Homework

Homework will be set on Seesaw every Friday and must be returned by the following Thursday. This will give children the opportunity to complete it at a convenient time – it also allows your child the time to come to us with questions, should they need to. Some children prefer to complete homework in their own time in school for various reasons. They are welcome to do so during allocated times if they’d like access to our devices, additional support or just to get it out of the way early!

Additional “home learning” is welcomed via access to educational apps children will have access to throughout the year. These include times tables on TTRockstars, grammar activities on Rollama and additional spellings on SpellingShed.

Spelling

Children will receive allocated spellings on SpellingShed every Tuesday. These can be practised via games/activities on the website in preparation for a test the following  Monday.

Rewards/Incentives

We operate a raffle ticket reward system in Year 6. Children are split into one of four colour teams. There is a reward experience for the winning colour team at the end of each half term as well as individual prizes awarded termly. Children can earn raffle tickets for their team for a whole range of reasons: input in class, impressive work, effort, being kind and helpful, good spellings scores, efficient completion of homework, good marks in spelling tests and good team work amongst many others.

Contacting Us

We are contactable via Dojo every weekday between the hours of 8am – 5pm to answer any questions/address any concerns you may have. Feel free to message and we’ll be in touch as soon as we can.

PE

In the autumn term, PE will take place on a Monday and Thursday. Children are to come to school in their PE kit for the PE session. For the first half of the term, children will be swimming on a Monday too so please ensure to pack the appropriate kit (swimming costume, towel and swimming hat).
