Year 5

Welcome to Class 5

  • Class Teacher: Mrs Milne

Welcome to Year 5! You are about to begin your journey as a member of Upper Key Stage 2, and become one of our shining examples of maturing pupils with good behaviour and an excellent attitude towards their work. I know you are ready to take on the challenge! You already know me well as I taught you all last year in Year 4! But did you know that I’ve been teaching here at Willington Primary since April 2012? I spent 12 years in Lower Key Stage 2 and I am very excited for my move to Year 5 with you all. Mrs Jacob will be one of our teaching assistants, and I know she is a favourite of this class, having supported them in various areas in both Year 3 and Year 4. We are looking forward to having a success year.

Home Activities

Year 5 is a very important year with lots of new learning content. To ensure that children achieve to their full potential, giving support in certain key areas such as reading, writing, spelling and maths is vital at home as well as at school. Please ensure your child reads regularly at home.

In Year 5, children will be expected to read, quiz and progress through the reading levels frequently. We expect 80% as a pass score for our AR quizzes, and when the children have scored three 100%s in a row, they can move up a reading level. This will be closely monitored in class. Once they have hit the targets set for a half term (each book they read gains points towards their target), children are able to read their own choice of book or help themselves to my “Free Reading” library until targets are reset the following half term and the process begins again.

Homework will be set on Seesaw every Thursday and must be returned by the following Thursday. This will give children time to complete it at home, or in Homework Club if they need staff support. Some children prefer to complete homework in their own time in school for various reasons such as lack of access to Seesaw at home. Additionally, please continue to access TTRockstars weekly.

Children will receive allocated spellings on SpellingShed every Monday. These can be practised via games/activities on the website in preparation for a test the following Monday.

Rewards/Incentives

We will be using ‘House Points’ in Year 5 to reward excellent work, behaviour and effort. Children are split into one of four colour teams and will work together in their team to earn points. The team with the most points at the end of each half term, will win a treat. Half termly, we will also reward the top three children from each coloured house that have earned the most points. Year 5 can earn points for their team for a whole range of reasons: exceptional reading quiz scores, input in class, impressive work, effort, being kind and helpful, good spellings scores, efficient completion of homework, good marks in spelling tests and good team work amongst many others.

Contacting Us

We are contactable via Class Dojo every weekday between the hours of 8am – 4pm to answer any questions/address any concerns you may have. Feel free to message and we’ll be in touch as soon as we can. If the concern is about attendance or illness, please contact the school office and they will log this correctly.

PE

In the autumn term, PE will take place on a Thursday and Friday. Mrs. Milne will take the Thursday sessions and concentrate on rules, tactics and healthy participation. Mr. Littlefair will take the Friday sessions and concentrate on skills. Children are to come to school in their PE kit for the PE session.
