Our Curriculum

Curriculum Rationale

At Willington Primary School every child is recognised as a unique individual within our school family. We celebrate and welcome the differences within our school community and have ‘No Outsiders’.

At Willington Primary school we believe that every child should enjoy their education and be happy, healthy and safe at school. Our curriculum aims to equip our pupils with afull range of skills that will allow them to be lifelong and successful learners.  The ability to learn is underpinned by the teaching of basic skills, knowledge, concepts and values. Raising the aspiration of our pupils is also important so they think about the opportunities their future holds and gives their education purpose. We want to prepare our pupils both for the next steps in their education as well as for the wider world. At Willington Primary School, we believe that effective partnerships between children, staff, parents, governors and the wider community are central to the success of our children.

We have designed a curriculum for our pupils that:

  • provides first-hand learning experiences
  • builds resilience
  • allows children to build relationships and develop interpersonal skills
  • promotes diversity
  • provides Oracy opportunities and build vocabulary
  • includes our local area
  • prioritises reading

Our curriculum offers a wide range of inspiring, engaging and exploratory learning experiences, that includes developing cultural capital through planned activities, such as school trips.

By the time our children move on to Secondary School we aim for them to have developed the following:

  • Resilience
  • Healthy Attitudes
  • Confidence
  • Independence
  • Literacy and Numeracy skills
  • Secure in their use of technology
  • Good communication skills
  • Self-Awareness
  • Social Skills – including good manners
  • Problem Solving
  • Respect/empathy/tolerance

As a school community we reflect regularly on our curriculum and school aims to ensure we are supporting the development of these skills and qualities.

Welcome to Willington Primary!

Curriculum Intent

At Willington Primary School, we provide a broad and varied curriculum where children are given learning opportunities that challenge and inspire them to reach their full potential. The aim of our curriculum is to prepare our pupils, ensuring they are equipped with the full range of skills that allows them to be lifelong learners ready for the next steps in their education and as well as preparing them for the wider world.

The Curriculum is all the planned activities that the school organises in order to promote learning, personal growth and development. This encompasses a wide range of subjects: English, mathematics, science, computing, art and design, Spanish, history, geography, physical education, music and religious education. Programmes of work are planned within the guidelines and requirements of the National Curriculum. We believe children learn better through a simulating and imaginative curriculum which encourages curiosity and creativity.  Our curriculum aims to engage pupils in their learning whilst developing knowledge and skills so they can achieve their very best.

Our Curriculum includes not only the formal requirements of the National Curriculum, but also the range of additional opportunities that the school organises in order to enrich the experiences of our children. This includes a range of ‘Enjoyment and Enrichment’ opportunities available to our children across all year groups. For more information please see Educational visits and school clubs.  We also have further information about Spiritual, Moral, Cultural Development as well as how we promote British values in our school.

For more information regarding what each Year Group cover, please go to Our Classes section. If you would like further information about our curriculum, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
