The whole school gathered together to hear a story called, ‘I Want My Hat Back’ by Jon Klassen. The bear’s hat is gone, and he wants it back. Patiently and politely, he asks the animals he comes across, one by one, whether they have seen it. Each animal says no. But just as the bear begins to despond, a deer comes by and asks a simple question that sparks the bear’s memory and he continues his search.
Each class used the story as inspiration for the week’s English lessons. There was lots of fun re-enacting the story and thinking about the feelings of the characters as well as speculation about what happened to the rabbit at the end! Each class did a piece of writing based on the story. Reception class wrote speech bubbles for the characters, Year 1 wrote stories about other animals who had lost something, Year 2 recounted the story, Year 3 wrote wonderful descriptions, Year 4 wrote short stories, Year 5 wrote diary entries from Bear’s point of view and Year 6 wrote police statements as taken from the rabbit. All pupils have worked very hard and have produced some super pieces of writing. Well done!
