Time Detectives – A Creative heritage project for Willington Primary School.
Our Year 5 class is taking part in Northern Heartlands’ Hidden Heritage of Willington Project ‘Time Detectives’. The project is a fully funded by National Lottery Hertitage Fund, Willington Town Council and Durham County Council. It provides opportunities for our pupils to jump feet first into our local history with the aim that children will feel more connected to their locality.
Session 1: Time Machine
First we travelled through time using a time machine! We never left the Willington area but visited lots of different time periods including Roman times, the pits & down the mines, the castle rebellion at Brancepeth and World War 2.
We explored maps of our area and looked at how Willington has changed over time.
We took a trip to Brancepeth Castle to learn in more detail about the1569 Northern Uprising.
Session 2: Early Life
We looked at artefacts discovered in Willington during the Roman and Bronze Age.
Next, we became archaeologists digging for artefacts and recording our findings.
