Dear Parents,
I would like to take this opportunity to inform you about our curriculum areas and timetable for the coming term.
Literacy:
Over the course of the term the children will complete writing tasks such as explanation texts and persuasive writing. The children will also explore the narrative works of Michael Morpurgo. They will write a new episode for a Morpurgo story, exploring how characters would respond to an new incident and how to resolve this. There will also be writing opportunities in our History to write diary entries, letters and more.
In addition, there will be more emphasis on grammar, punctuation and spelling this term. This will help to prepare the children for their SPAG test, which is one of the Year 6 SATs. In preparation for the reading test, the children will have sessions focussing on question types. We will examine how to answer the questions effectively, efficiently and correctly.
Numeracy:
In Maths this term we will continue to work upon all times tables and improving our mental skills further. We will also work on: counting, partitioning and calculating, securing number facts, understanding shape, handling data and measures. All of the skills and methods that the children have learnt will be put into practice with problem solving, investigations and puzzles.
Science:
This term the children will have the opportunity to improve their scientific enquiry skills through investigating forces and electricity. The class will learn that objects are pulled downwards because of the gravitational attraction between them and the Earth. Also, they will study about friction, including air resistance, as a force which slows moving objects and may prevent objects from starting to move. The children will have fun constructing circuits incorporating a battery or power supply and a range of switches, to make electrical devices. They will investigate making bulbs brighter and dimmer in a circuit.
Topic:
This term the Year 6 topic will be World War Two. During this topic, the children will learn a range of historical skills including:
Using sources of evidence to deduce information about the past.
Describing the characteristic features of the past, including ideas, beliefs, attitudes and experiences of men, women and children
Suggest causes and consequences of some of the main events and changes in history.
These skills will enable the children to understand what it was like to live in Britain during World War Two. As part of this learning, some children will create some authentic war recipes during their ‘Let’s Get Cooking’ sessions. The cooking project will culminate in a VE Day celebration for parents and carers of year 6 children!
Year 6 World War Two Topic –Find out what Year 6 children thought about becoming an evacuee.
As part of year 6 class topic on World War 2 children discovered envelopes on their desks this week which contained their new identities. They were dismayed to discover they were to become a child who had been evacuated in World War Two. The class were labelled with their new names, for example Alfred or Rita and given information about what the evacuee experienced. They were shocked to find out that children had to use ‘outside’ toilets or even worse a chamber pot! They could not believe that children were separated from their families and everything they knew. Some of the children found out they received regular beatings from their new carers! But through all the heartache and dismay they did find some thing’s amusing for example, when one child fell down some stairs carrying a full chamber pot eewwww!
Physical Education:
PE will take place on Wednesday afternoons. The children will benefit from training from a fully qualified sports coach. The sessions will focus on understanding, choosing and applying a range of tactics and strategies for defence and attack. They will learn how to use these tactics and strategies more consistently in similar games
Homework:
Children will receive 2 pieces of homework each Friday to be handed in on the following Thursday. Spellings will be handed out each Friday with the test taking place the following Friday. In addition to this homework Y6 children will be expected to read their school readers each school night and at least once over the weekend. This will be checked in class each morning.
