I would like to take this opportunity to inform you about our curriculum areas and timetable for the coming term.
Numeracy
This term the children will cover the following learning objectives:
Number and Place Value
- identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations
Addition and Subtraction
- add and subtract numbers mentally, including:
- a three-digit number and units e.g. 132 + 2 =
- a three-digit number and tens e.g. 132 + 12 =
- a three-digit number and hundreds 132 + 100 =
- estimate the answer to a calculation and use inverse operations to check answers
e.g. 16 + ___ = 24 so 24 – 16 will give us the answer.
- add and subtract amounts of money to give change, using both £ and p in practical contexts e.g. If I go to the shop with £1 and buy some crisps for 32p, how much change will I receive?
Measurement
- measure, compare, add and subtract: lengths (m / cm / mm); mass (kg / g); volume / capacity (l / ml)
- add and subtract amounts of money to give change, using both £ and p in practical contexts
Fractions
- count up and down in tenths; recognise that tenths arise from dividing an object into 10 equal parts and in dividing one-digit numbers or quantities by 10
- recognise and use fractions as numbers: unit fractions and non-unit fractions with small denominators
- add and subtract fractions with the same denominator within one whole [for example, 5?7 + 1?7 = 6?7]
- compare and order unit fractions and fractions with the same denominator
- solve problems that involve all of the above.
Literacy
Children will begin by looking at adventure stories and identifying their common themes. They will use the character Flat Stanley as a stimuli to plan and write their own adventure story. They will be working on chunking their writing into paragraphs and using inverted commas to punctuate speech.
Topic
Adventures – Children will use locations around the world, Europe in particular, to learn all about how the weather and climate changes the way in which people live. They will use their knowledge of weather to choose a location for a given holiday criteria. The children will be also recording the weather in the area they live.
To investigate places and patterns.
To communicate geographically.
PE
The children will have PE on Thursday afternoons. On these days could you please remind your child to bring in their kit – including suitable shoes and a tracksuit or something warm in the winter in case PE takes place outdoors. Long hair must be tied back and jewellery should not be worn.
Homework
Homework is done in learning logs and includes a variety of activities. It will be given out on a Friday and is to be handed in no later than the following Thursday. Homework can be completed independently or with help from a family member.
Spellings will be given out on a Friday to be tested the following Friday. The number of spellings given out will vary according to the spelling rule or pattern being learnt. I suggest the children learn their spellings using the ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check’ method which they know.
The children will also be given a times table to learn for a test each Monday – they will know which table they are on.
As the children will be reading more demanding texts, it is essential that they keep up home reading. Reading little and often is better than a huge amount in one night, therefore children are expected to read at home 5 times a week and bring back their reading books and reading records every day to read in class.
