Pupil Premium is additional funding given to schools so that they can support particular groups of pupils who are known to be a risk of underachievement and close the gap between them and their peers. The Pupil Premium is allocated to schools for pupils, in Year R to 11, that are known to be eligible for free school meals (FSM) or who have been eligible for FSM in the past six years (Ever6).
Pupil Premium is also allocated for children who have been looked after by the local authority (LA) continuously for more than 6 months. A premium is also paid for children whose parents are currently in the Armed Forces.
At Willington Primary School, in line with DfE guidance, we spend the pupil premium on improving the educational and personal outcomes of children depending on their needs to improve attainment. Pupil premium is not a personal budget for individual pupils and schools are not required to spend all of the allocated grant on eligible pupils. In our school, if a child has gaps in their educational attainment, we will target support for them, which may be personalised or through group intervention. Alternatively, for some children a whole class or school intervention may be appropriate.
At Willington Primary School our pupil premium spending is used in these areas:-
- High-quality teaching, such as staff professional development.
- Targeted academic support, such as tutoring.
- Wider strategies to address non-academic barriers to success in schools, such as attendance, behaviour and social and emotional support.
Measuring the Impact of Pupil Premium
We measure the impact of pupil premium by closely monitoring our teaching and interventions through learning walks, pupil progress meetings, data and work scrutiny. The final impact will be assessed during the Summer term through analysis of the progress of children eligible for pupil premium compared to other pupils. Reception, Year 2 and Year 6 data will also be compared against national figures. Our Pupil Premium Strategy is reviewed annually at the end of the Summer term and the outcomes are presented to governors in the Autumn term Full Governing Body meeting.
